July 2014 Creating a masterpiece...

Get set, GO!
Here are some of the kids working on a group picture of the Beach Club with a stage performance (looks a bit like a Red Bull event...!).
All 14 kids worked on this for 45 minutes, frantically colouring, drawing, cutting.

Before we started they doubted whether they would finish it in that time... They were really pleased with the end result and loved working in a team having different roles and responsibilities. WELL DONE GUYS!
Outline the backgrounds and Skate ramps

Colour the backgrounds

Stick on trees,  speakers, skaters, musicians

I did that bit, i did that bit......

WE NEED MORE SPEAKERS ON THIS STAGE... IT NEEDS TO BE LOUDER!!

See you all again soon at another fantastic Jam and picture session.

Let the counting begin...

Hey Islanders!
The summer expedition is imminent. It's looking like a long round trip.
Setting sail on July 16th, to eventually return after 25th, if the wind is blowing in the right direction!

5 days to go!

May HalfTerm camp.

May was nice.
The Bananaquits were singing in the mango trees, and the sea gently lapped the shore to a backdrop of ''...pack up your troubles in your old kit bag...''
Happy days!

Monday 19 May 2014

The Count Down...

Yes it has Begun ....
Only seven days to go till we sail off majestically.... or probably row off not very majestically... or not row anywhere, just walk a bit and maybe jump in a car or bus or something hmm.. (Where was I)

Oh yes it has begun. pack your best shorts and binoculars and we will be off in search of musical adventures on the 'golden sand and blue sea' Island of Mozo!

The weather looks pretty good from here!

We can't wait!

Getting good..

Captain's log: April 11th - Day Five
Nearing the end of a great expedition to the tropical Mozo Island. We had hot sunshine on some days then hot rain on others. Some of these kids have kept hiking the whole week! Now they will be able to take those skills and continue their own musical journey.
We will always look back fondly at these times, sitting round the camp fire grooving to 'I gotta Feeling.... Whooo Hoooo'.
See you again soon my musical traveling friends!

There will always be a space in the boat for you!
.... Big day tomorrow... April 12th ... Learn to play day!
Ritz music and tuition centre will open it's door all day long to families from west London, Putney, Richmond, Twickenham...
Come along for FREE and try loads of instruments.
Choose between:
Group sessions, individual lessons or instrument workshops.
Mozo Island camp will be there bring your sunglasses!

Jim signing off.

Uncontrollable laughter...

Captain's log: 10th April - Day Four

Designed some musical Tropical Island tshirts, which somehow kept the new visitors amused for a while.
At first light we gathered our belongings and headed for a nearby camp in a new location, the island natives weren't hostile, and we were received with a ukulele jam in A minor, and fresh guitar picks. Phew, that was good timing some of us had just worn through our other ones!

Wednesday 9 April 2014

Message to you..

Captain's log: 9th April - Day Three
Rudi, a message to you.
Played some classic ska from 1980s! They loved that!
Spent some time drawing pictures of the boats we arrived on. Some focused on practical things like water and potatoes, others drew guitars and keyboards! One child wanted an Xbox on the boat, but it wasn't possible until they invented solar panels!

Tuesday 8 April 2014

More escaped children at large...

Captain's log: 8th April 2014 - Day2
The boat on the horizon arrived with a total of eleven children eager to escape the city life and enjoy some 'Bossa Nova' and 'Reggae'.
Our supplies are diminishing, we will have to send out for guitar picks and egg shakers...
Jim signing off.

Monday 7 April 2014

We escaped...we arrived!

Captains log: April 7th. 2013 - Day One
A group of 9 or 10 children and a couple of musicians landed on shore early this morning. We were greeted by calypso music and a cloudy sky, but the cloud soon cleared to reveal a great day of instrument exploration... We can see another small vessel on the horizon heading this way. I hope they packed supplies!
Jim signing off.

A Giant Thanks...

.... to the team this week.

Chai and Aous from Brunel and their friend Rachel.
Toby and Jack.
Rianna.

A personal thank you from Jim!
Lets see some of those magic moments again!

I have seen a smile from ear to ear on every child's face this week, and these wonderful people have helped to make that happen.

The high point of the week had to be making our singing masks. You never know what you are going to end up with.

Here are a few of the kids grooving with:

''Clap along, if you feel like an apple with a red guitar....
Clap along if you feel like a banana with a blue guitar...''

Tuesday 21 January 2014

This year is looking tropical.

Is it me...
... or can I hear calypso music wherever i go?

I can hear a gentle Ukulele strumming sweetly and some groovy drumming with a group of children giggling in the distance.

Mozo Island is a very sunny place at the moment! It is 'all-of-a-glow' with songs from the Caribbean.
Some Calypso, Reggae, little bit of SKA perhaps...

The favourite song of the Year 1 kids in the Putney After-School Club is 'Matilda' an old Calypso.

Some slight lyric alterations made it more memorable:

''Matilda, -                              Matilda, -            Matilda she took me chocolate and ran to Jamaica
Matilda, - (Come right back) Matilda,- (With my snack)  Matilda she took me chocolate and ran to Jamaica- (Come right back)''

I love the original version, and Harry Belafonte sings a great version too.

Want to sing pop songs?
… and jam in a band?
… and escape to a tropical beach club?

This has been going well, and the kids are having a fab time exploring all of these instruments.

There was a club in October HalfTerm and some Free Taster Sessions, with pictures that will go up when i can find them on my camera.

The 'Beginners' Club' did an end of term presentation, which ended with a stage invasion by many younger brothers and sisters grabbing shakers and tamborines and beating drums at the wrong moment.

Unforgettable!... unfortunately no photos or videos of the event have come forward yet.
